Scouts and Guides: Active Global Citizens

Scouts and Guides: Active Global Citizens was a global education project from NaZemi carried out in seven European countries (Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Poland, Scotland, Slovakia and Slovenia) and mostly funded by the EU. The project started in December 2014 and ended in December 2017.

About the project

In the participating countries, the project was implemented through the collaboration of an NGO and a Scouts and Guides organisation. Internationally, it was supported by the two global Scout organizations, the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) and World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS).

The project aimed to increase the role of Scouts and Guides in promoting human rights, equality and justice. It encouraged them to better understand the interconnected world in which local actions have global impacts.

The project aimed to increase the role of Scouts and Guides in promoting human rights, equality and justice. It encouraged them to better understand the interconnected world in which local actions have global impacts.

The project helped build a more complex understanding of the world and the role Scouts and Guides could play in it. Our goal was to motivate Scouts and Guides and provide them with tools that can help them make informed decisions and take actions at the individual as well as collective levels that contribute to positive change in the world, in the words of Robert Baden-Powell, “leave this world a little better than they found it”.

Thank to personal approach strategy we managed to directly reach more than 139 000 Scouts and Guides in the all 3 Action years. We realized more than 2800 GE programs. Our Scout GE experts performed more than 230 seminars and educated more than 4218 Scout and Guide leaders.

According to the monitoring and evaluation , 80% of the Scouts and Guides participating in the project used the gained information somehow and 71% of them spoke with someone else about the global education themes. Moreover, 26% of them even changed their behaviour and 13 % changed their scout and guide life.

The project is one of the seven winners of Global Education Innovation Award 2018.

What we did?

Built a team of Scout GE experts
We established and trained a group of 105 Scout GE experts. They  lectured workshops, lessons, contributed to the project tool content and carry on promoting its ideas after the project has ended.

The project used a cascade or multiplier approach; core groups of highly motivated and skilled Scout GE experts shared their expertise with their peers and colleagues.

Global Citizenship Competences
We formulated the key competences which identifies the most important values and attitudes, areas of knowledge and understanding and skills that Scouts and Guides need to help build a sustainable and just world.
The competences are available online on the project web page www.globalscouting.org/global-citizenship-competences-of-scout-and-guides-52.

Global Compass
The Global Compass is a tool that helps evaluate actions, programmes and behaviour in Scouting and Guiding. It offers guidance to those wanting to become more globally responsible.
It can be accessible through the web page www.globalnikompas.cz/en which was visited app. 7000 times by 4000 unique web users from all seven Action partner countries.

Publication Scouts and Guides: Active Global Citizens
The aim of the book is to enable Scouts and Guides to explore and understand global interdependencies and the role they can play in them. It also seeks to inspire by offering examples of activities, opportunities and ideas for ways to recognize and participate in shaping global responsibilities in today‘s world.

Publication is available online on the project web page www.globalscouting.org/ge-publication.

Methodologies of informed actions
This methodology was intended as a support for the informed actions; as an easy manual for those who want to do some local acts with global impact.
The methodology is available online at http://globalscouting.org/gira.
In Czech, the methodology was printed and associated with the nationwide scouting event and helped create dozens of informed events. You can see this printed version on czech project web page www.skautinazemi.cz/skautsky-dobry-skutek.

A series of international meetings
To these meetings, we had invited experts on various topics from global education. Scouts could have gained new knowledge and skills.
They also had a chance to form their own opinions. It was a great opportunity to share experiences of each other, explore different points of view and build new relations. For photo and video outputs click here: http://globalscouting.org/get-deeper.

Other activities
During the project we produced many other outcomes ,e.g. E-learning courses, Programme database, Handbook for leaders and Handbook for children etc.
